It can be difficult to get a a course in miracles published. Publishers are looking for ideas that are new and fresh. Readers don’t want to read the same thing, and publishers know this. Publishers are looking for books that they know will sell. The single most important part of deciding whether or not a book will sell is the book proposal submitted by an author.
Even established authors submit book proposals. The proposal gives the author a chance to pitch their book to a publisher without actually having a completed manuscript. Because the book proposal is the selling point, writing a good book proposal is more important than the content of the book itself.
A successful book proposal should grab the attention of the publisher within the first few sentences. It should be written in a manner that is organized and well thought out. It should also give the publisher a clear and concise idea of what the book is about and why they should publish it. There are eight different components to a successful book proposal.
The book overview:
The book overview is the most important part of the proposal. This is the first part of the proposal that the publisher will read. It is composed of an introduction, book hook, and book description. Each section should be brief and to the point. However, it should also grab the publisher’s attention right away. It should make them want to read more. This is what will lead them to the next section of the proposal.
The marketing section:
The marketing section is the part of the book proposal in which the author details what audience will read their book. The more markets a book can appeal to, the better the book’s chance of getting published.
The promotions section:
The promotions section is what shows the publisher that the author is willing to be proactive in promoting their book. This assertiveness can make a difference in whether or not an author’s book is published. The publisher wants to know that the author is willing to make themselves available for as many promotion opportunities as possible.
Competing books section:
The competing books section is where an author will compare their book to the works of their competition. This section is what makes a book stand out above their competition. The idea is for the author to discuss each competing book in no more than two sentences, pointing out a shortcoming or drawback of the competing book, and describe why their book is better.
About the author section:
This is the section where an author describes themselves in a way that an agent might describe them. It lists any works they have already published as well as any education or media mentions they may have. This is also where the author conveys their excitement about their work.
Table of contents:
A book review should contain two tables of contents. The first table is for the overview, which shows that author is organized in their thought process. The second table is for the book itself. This shows that the book is organized and planned out.
Chapter by chapter summary:
This section of the proposal briefly describes each chapter of the book and what it covers. This also should be organized.
Sample chapters generally contain one or two chapters from the middle section of the book. The middle of the book is what tends to get the publisher immersed in the plot of the book without giving away the story.
